Fat and Sassy

my views on being larger than life.

So it IS genetic after all. – quick hit. February 4, 2010

“Adding more evidence to theories linking DNA to weight, European scientists report that a genetic variation seems to virtually guarantee that a person will become obese.”   i love it when an article opens like that……in the clamor that is LOSE WIEGHT  FATTY or you will DIIIEEEEEE rhetoric that passes for news, today’s article was refreshing.   According to the article, this study was the first of its kind in “proving” that weight has a genetic component.   They studied the genomes of over 16,000, and found 19 had a genetic abnormality, and all of the 19 were obese.

“We feel that this is a major advance — the first paper to convincingly demonstrate that a relatively rare genetic variant can also be an important cause of common obesity,” said study co-author Alexandra Blakemore, a senior lecturer at Imperial College London.”Although the percentage of severely obese people with this (variation) is just under one person, that adds up to an awful lot of people in total,” Blakemore said. “The effect on carriers is very strong.””

So there we have it….some of the first hard evidence of a genetic component to obesity….i wonder how long it will be before they find all the genetic causes, and then try to change THEM, for our own good you see, because we shouldnt be fat, even if it’s in our GENES!  The article DOES admit “Not all obese people can get skinnier by eating less and exercising more, Weiss said. “The bottom line is that they may be able to eat less, but their bodies may be so efficient that they can extract calories from food much more effectively and may not be burning energy as efficiently as others,” he said.”

It goes on to say that “This fact leads to unhappy news for some obese people, he said. “If you’re eating just one pea and you’re gaining weight, you’ll have to cut the pea in half.” WTF….i’m supposed to eat half a pea now, even though my genes make me fat….I think he’s missing it entirely…./headdesk.  Some people are genetically predisposed to be fat….they DO reach a homeostasis (trust me i can eat whatever the fuck i want and i wont go over 330….but i can starve myself and never get below 280)  and eating half a pea a day and exercising for 8 hours on top of it wont keep it off for long….sure you can lose 80-100 lbs on the biggest loser, but lets see you keep it up without condemning yourself to running marathons on 1200 calories a day.  Or keep it off for 5 years.  95% of diets fail.  period.  and they do so because, as we are now discovering, study by study, comparing everything from genomes to twins that it is genetic.

what does this remind you of? January 31, 2010

so yea i watch reality tv…so what.  I love it….the anthropoligst in me wants to pay for the premium 24 access to watch the big brother news feed (i did that the 2nd year they were on)  anyhoo gotta rant on this……

Anybody watch the biggest loser (i refuse to dignify it with a link) and get reminded of the Running Man by Steven King? “the Games Federation, a government-mandated television station that runs violent game shows. In one game, Treadmill to Bucks, a contestant with a heart or respiratory condition runs on a treadmill earning prize money for the duration of their run, often dying in the process.” (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Running_Man)  huh…sort of sounds like the biggest loser to me, just framed every so slightly differently.   At least on treadmill to bucks the contestants get paid, even if they don’t lose the most weight.

what the hell has the world come to….I am just waiting for shows like the running man  to start.  and hell I hate to say it I would watch. i watch solitary for its eerie creepy doing-a-phychological-test-for-50k craziness so i can see its appeal. (and if you havent seen solitary check it out on Fox reality or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solitary_(TV_series  also apparently the network is going of the air in march 2010 so catch it if you can)

Fat man circus on tyra January 26, 2010

i know a LOT of discussion happens in the fatosphere about bbw clubs.  Frankly i love them myself…..a place where i can go and men love my curves, my thickness.   I know its more acceptible for men to be more out of shape,  but there have to be men out there that feel the “im fat and i cant get no love” stigma too.

So i sat down and watched this segment on tyra about sexy, big men.  Here is my blow by blow, as i watched the segment:

According to NYT and tyra, “pot bellies are the new washboard stomach.”   What i like (and what pisses me off at the same time) is there are hoots and hollers from the audience, like its ok, and normal when the subject is brought up.   I bet if it was about bbw club, there would be no cheers from the audience.

They talked about sex being “more cushion for the pushing”   One guest speaks about throwing away their man’s diet pills, she didn’t want him to lose his belly.  They talk about how big men are safe to climb on, you know they can take it, and how riding a fat man doesn’t hurt as bad as a bony one.   A guest talks about how skinny guys that are attractive KNOW they are attractive. and act as such, but a fat guy can be cute and s still be a gentleman.

And then the mockery starts….first one guest gives her man a raspberry…then tyra dresses the men up like Chippendales and has the guests feel them up.   ….trya im disappointed.    I KNOW she is part of the diet obsessed world, but i like her as a person and usually she’s kind of sensitive to things (im reminded of an episode where she shows the prejudices of people and included fat as one of them.)   But with this….great, thanks…once again the men are just fat clowns.   God that gets old.  Men can be fat and sexy and not have it be silly or a joke.   (OMFG she just said who wants to smell it…i think i threw up in my mouth a little)

oh great thats not enough….now they roll out the OMG fat is unhealthy guest…including a lady that has to be a size 20 or so saying she should be the only fat one in  a relationship, and her being fat is “natural”  (its natural for all of us thanks.)  great thanks for nothing tyra…one guest even said “it’s not healthy, its greasy” about the pot belly.  Tyra makes the new “fat hating” guests get in bed with a guy with a pot belly and rub him in a sexual manner (ew, wrong on SOOOO many levels)

I really wish we could all just be people…  we all have SOMETHING…we are all either fat or skinny, tall or short, red, white, black, asian what have you.  Every time there is a show like this one, or a “I love asian men” show it just reminds folks of our otherness, how we  are different.    Why is it ok for men to be fat, sexy even (even if in a silly way, look at Ron Jeremy, he is far from fit or svelte and is one of the top porn stars of all time) while women can’t be or they are a fetish?   Men of my BMI date all the time, and the women that date them are not just fatties, they are all sizes….but if a woman of size dates a skinny guy, he is automatically a fat fetishist, labeled “other” (because fetishes are just not “normal” sexual behaviors am I right?) and discounted.

cautiously excited: new reality tv with Carnie Wilson January 13, 2010

So for those of you who don’t know…I LOVE LOVE LOVE   reality tv.  I have a degree in anthropology, and there we learned it’s not ok to take 10 americans and force them to survive on an island….but you can pay them to do it with fabulous prizes.   It gives you a chance to people watch and i do so love to people watch….but I digress….

I was watching Tabitha’s Salon takeover (http://www.bravotv.com/tabathas-salon-takeover) when I saw a commercial for this show on the game show network of all places…http://tv.gsn.com/shows/unstapled/.   Carnie Wilson, the “fat” member of Wilson Philips (or as I call her the pretty one) has had her ups and downs, her spokesmodelships with weight loss companies, her stomach stapling, and her playboy cover.  Now shes making a reality show.   I actually started CRYING (gogo pms yay!)  and hopped online to see more…i am cautiously optimistic…..hit play one the box in the middle of the link and you will see the commercial, i cant seem to find it on you tube to link it to you guys right now so its playable on my blog (hopefully an edit will be coming soon on that front).

After perusing the site I am even more happy…nowehre does it say “as we follow her on her journey to lose weight”  it does mention weight control, but that IMHO tends to mean more eat right and less diet.  here is the direct quote of the tv guide-y blurb they ahd….”Unfiltered. Uncompromising. Unpredictable. Carnie Wilson, host of the Newlywed Game, brings you inside her chaotic life with her own new reality show. Mother, wife, entrepreneur, singer and songwriter; you won’t want to miss Carnie struggle to get her busy life – and weight – Under Control.”

Looking through the photo gallery, and watching the videos, at first i was sacred…i KNOW she got her stomach stapled, and I was worried it was going to be one of those inspirational-watch-the-fatty-cry-and-lose-weight shows that crop up everywhere in the wake of biggest loser (which i HATE as someone with exercise and bulimia and competition issues, but i digress again go ADD)…this does not seem to be.   It does not seem to be however.   She DOES exercise, and she does makes salads in some of the pictures, but she is also baking cookies and other tasty desserts too, and more importantly is sharing them with all freely and happily with the joy only a good cook may have.   I have always loved Carnie since the mid 90s, she was pretty and a rockstar with MY body type (and so was her mom) .  I know she’s been doing the newlywed came and other hosting jobs over at GSN (and doing really well at it too)   Seeing the clips available online makes me like her even more…she seems brass and sexy, tired like moms can be, but unabashedly sexy and willing to talk about sex toys.  HEr mas seems to love her too, just the way she is, and doesn’t see to mind being intimate.  Hopefully the cameras don’t ruin their relationship like it has for oh so many other reality tv couples.  They are both rockstars already, and carnie has grown up in the limelight, it may turn out ok….i for one will be watching.
