In my skimmings this week I found this article http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100116104535.htm and forgot about it till today when I found it in my to do folder.  

The tone of the article annoyed me, what  with the “worrying if your bum looks big in this”  but its research appeared to be sound, and the finding really nothing surprising…We have known for years that the “bellyfat”  aka apple shape seen more on the male body shape is worse for you than the “womanly” fat of hips and butt (aka pear shaped).  This study, done by a team from the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism (OCDEM)  published their summary of the latest research in the International Journal of Obesity.  In fact their findings was not only is it better for you to be pear shaped than apple shaped, but it is ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOU.   “However, it is only very recently that thigh fat and a larger hip circumference have been shown to promote health, that lower body fat is protective by itself.” says Dr Konstantinos Manolopoulos, one of the paper’s authors along with Dr Fredrik Karpe and Professor Keith Frayn.  wait you mean that lower bottom fat is GOOD for me?     he goes on to add that this protection is INDEPENDENT of weight.  

….and then he {of course) mentions that ‘Control of body weight is still the best way to stay healthy, and the advice remains the same: it is important to eat less and exercise more.’   wait wait…didnt you just tell me that a fat ass was ok…in fact good for me?

Basically, for you tecchies out there, both areas, waist and butt/thigh can store fat…..its easier to lose it off the waist, but that is not really a good thing..fat around the waist is much more active in storing and releasing fatty acids in response to need throughout the day. Thigh fat is used for much longer term storage.  (side note….isnt belly fat eaiser to lose too?)  but thigh fat and butt fat trap the fatty acids longer term, meaning less fatty acids in the blood to build up around organs and muscles, which is what leads to diabetes.   (so fatty acids realised by losing the fat in our bellies causes harm….hummm)  waist fat also releases cytokines which leads to inflammation and things like heart disease……(and the cytokines caused by losing belly fat causes inflamation…which leads to heart attacks and strokes.,……double hummmmm)    What they don’t come out and tell you, but you can see by reading between the lines (or my parentheses)  is….yoyo dieting, caused by loss and gain of belly fat causes heart attacks, diabetes, ect…….

it amazes me that studies can look at these issues and not see the correlations….they are soo busy looking at OMG GET SKINNY that they don’t look at their own data in an unbiased way.

A new metastudy by UCLA (is THAT a big enough name for you to pay attention to media?  or are you  going to ignore it as usual?)  For one i dont have to be snarky and i will use their own words, but the highlighted emphasis is mine.

ok so apparently there was some i hate jillian michaels post that has been swallowed up by the powers that be.  (One of my future guest bloggers pointed it out)   I will be looking for it, for it was (imho) funny and over the top rage at the ickiness that this yell-in-your-worthless face personal trainer mentality.  FOr those that got to see it awesome,  feel my wrath!  If not sorry and I will reconstruct it when I am feeling sufficient hatred towards my reality tv nemesis The Biggest Loser (hereby called TBL).  Alas in too good a mood today (had date night last night so weeeeeeee!) and off to pick up the kiddos.   

In the meantime…anyone care to help spark my rage at the Biggest Loser? (especially in light of my recent post about exercise bulimia which you can find here https://erylin.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/elle-admits-to-exersize-bulimia/)   IF you are the one to light my fire, I will gladly do an extra rant of the fa subject of your choice, free of charge!   now….GO!

I hate Jillian Michaels January 22, 2010

Just saying I hate her…..I hope she gets a metabolic disorder and people tell her to stop eating fatty….except she can’t because its genetic even if she eats nothing and works out for 5 hours a day. (like many x-biggest loser contestants, some of whom train for MARATHONS on 1200 calories a day.)   May she blow out a knee and never be able to do another lunge.   I wish her nothing but what she pushes on other people for the sake of ratings and money (never  ever pretend it’s about “compassion”  thats a load of crap.)  May she have heat stroke while running a mile …..in a fat suit.  

IN fact she is bad at selling things too…a new video of hers pushes a kettlebell workout…well i found this article blasting her (and he does it as nice as he can too, they ARE selling kettlebells after all and she is the hottest weight loss trainer since the ab-rower )  http://www.charmcitykettlebells.com/sandys-journal/jillianmichaelsisbadforkettlebells/

Thats the problem with the EXERSIZE FATTY approach to weight loss… if you aren’t already fit, jumping into 3 hours of cardio a day will KILL you….or at the very least injure you.   All things in moderation people jesus.   And you know what, life it’s too short to do what she does, what she makes people do on tv for money.   Life is here to ENJOY the best  way you can……that includes eating well, dancing through life, and loving the souls around you.  It does NOT include climbing a never-ending ladder till you fall over.   And then have an angry (albiet hot in an overtoned martial arts sort of way)  brunette yelling at you “stupid fatty you are ruining your life, your kids lives and the country!”

(Well THATS been brewing for a while…sorry folks.  Some things just have to be ranted upon…I guess i have been rant-y lately…must be the moon or something)

I ran across this article while looking for obesity =health risk OMG articles:


These articles just piss me off….they claim that the study found this and this blah blah blah….but when the study refutes themselves they stick it as an afterthought at the end of the article.   And as usual I have a few questions…first off did the study account for age (I bet not, or it would say it did.) and second who funded the study….if you ever took statistics you can see it’s really easy to skew things the way you want to, you just have to word it right…as fact activists we have to get really savvy at reading between the lines and looking at the data itself not the claims.   THe baby boomers are aging, skewing the population older…and older=fatter…skew the mean age up by 5 years..f.rom say 30-35 i bet that adds 10 lbs to the average person…making some just heavy enough to be “overweight”

Returning to the article:  “Obesity appears to act by increasing the incidence of high blood pressure and diabetes, two major risk factors for stroke and other cardiovascular problems, the study indicated. When blood pressure readings and diabetes were factored into the calculations, the association between obesity was weakened, “suggesting these major risk factors explain much of the obesity-stroke association,” Yatsuya said.   And despite the mountain of evidence linking obesity and stroke, “we don’t have clear evidence that obesity reduction reduces stroke rate,” he said. Controlled trials are needed to prove that obesity prevention or reduction reduces stroke risk, he said.” (emphasis mine)

So yea, fat people get diabetes.   And diabetes =heart issues much of the time.   But weight loss has NOT been proven to help….maybe just maybe, what causes fat also causes diabetes and heart disease…and thats  GENETICS.   But, you see, genetics doesn’t make money.   So lets scare the fatties into dieting …..until they get diabetes and heart disesase….then scare them into weight loss surgery…and more drugs…adn follow up visits…and now, ten years down the line, they are 20 lbs skinner, still sick with heart issues and diabetes now will vitamin deficiencies and spend even MORE money….because health care, for the most part is NOT about health and ALL about money.  As someone with no insurance, its amazing how little push I get form the doctors to sell me diet drugs…because I can’t afford it.   SO they don’t sell me an expensive weight loss drug, I don’t have insurance to pay for it…and my numbers are good  even though i am  around 300 and well into OMG deathfat your gonna DIEEEE range and have been for over 10 years.  I am healthy and eat well (despite what many friends and family think)  i do yoga 3-4 times a week.  I PROMISE i can swim farther than you (unless you can swim like 5 miles at a stretch)


Just remember kids correlation =/= causation.


yet another diet drug shown to be bad for you

So the fda had forced Meridia, a popular weight loss prescription, marketed as a way to lose weight “for your health” , to issues a warning.  ”  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the drug’s manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories, has agreed to revise Meridia’s label to add the new warning.  Specifically, the drug should not be used by people with a history of coronary artery disease (e.g., heart attack, angina), stroke or transient ischemic attack, heart arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, peripheral arterial disease, or uncontrolled high blood pressure”  Inst that why we fatties are supposed to lose weight in the first place?  I mean if you are over 300 lbs, don’t you already have heart disease because you are OMG DEATHFAT?!?!?!?!


I love how the diet industries want to push this weight = bad but EVERY SINGLE  THING they market either doesn’t work( 95% of diets fail, even WEIGHT WATCHERS says that) , is simply glorified speed and gives you a heart attack(as in ever diet pill to date, except alli, that just makes you poop oil), or they cut your stomach in half?  THOSE are my options?   for my HEALTH?   WHy dont i just go buy a pound of meth and clean my house while I am at it.  JEEZ.
