its all in the genes. January 6, 2010

i have a feed to new scientist, a sort of meta journal magazine that has journalists reading all the hard science journals and tells you whats in them in a nutshell.  I run across all sorts of good info over there, especially about genetics and how it relates to fitness WITHOUT a fitness company pushing an agenda….some of the information is quite interesting and doesnt make much of the “mainstream” media.   A few goodies from today :

1. THE HERITAGE FAMILY STUDY

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20527421.700-is-getting-fit-easier-for-some-people.html.  Here they took almost 500 sedentary people from 90 families and made them work out (supervised)  45 min 3 times a week (and they describe the  workout as vigorous)   for 20 weeks.   many showed miprovment….but 1 in 10 show not change in fitness level at all.  And even more disheartening….those with no physical changes despite the workouts tended to be in families, strongly suggesting that there is a genetic factor.    HOwever, backing the health at every size theory, the study found that even if there was no weight loss, all the other numbers….blood pressure, cholesterol were down and their blood glucose was better too.

2. EXERSIZE 150 MIN A WEEK AND DO IT HOW YOU LIKE

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20527421.300-how-much-and-how-often.html.  now the latest studies find that all you need is the magic 150, and you can do it in 10 min spurts all week-long if you like.

3. FAT AND FIT?

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20527421.800-can-you-be-fat-and-fit.html talks about a study with 2600 people in it (i love big numbers in studies…it shows the norm oh so much better than say 12 or 18 people like many other “diet” studies..read the fine print people)  ran on a treadmill till they were physically exhausted, an established proxy for fitness.  Only 1/3 of those who were mildly obese were unfit, and of those moderately obese only/2 were unfit.  They found that “measures of aerobic fitness – the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to the muscles – have nothing to do with the amount of fat tissue present.”  they then followed these folks for 12 years….and the risk of dying was more associated with FITNESS not FATNESS.  (and while this article seemed to have a “so get fit fattie” tone, it does show that at least half the “OMG OBESE” people were ALREADY fit)

Nice catches. I love the rationalization that goes along with any study that seems to exonerate weight. They’re so desperate to maintain the horror of fat while being scientific. So hard!

    Peace,
